The 2023 Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia witnessed a historic moment as Michelin celebrated its 500th victory in the FIM MotoGP World Championship. The race, which took place at the Mandalika International Street Circuit, saw Ducati Lenovo Team's Francesco Bagnaia emerge victorious, marking a significant milestone in the world of motorcycle racing. This milestone coincided with Michelin's 50-year anniversary of innovation in the FIM World Championship, making it a double celebration for the iconic tyre manufacturer.
“The Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia is of particular importance this year for Michelin as the winner of the race will give Bibendum his 500th victory in the FIM MotoGP World Championship. A great way to celebrate 50 years of innovation in motorcycle Grand Prix racing, since Jack Findlay's victory in the Senior TT in 1973. It was the first success for Michelin in the 500cc category, which was the premier class of the time”, said Piero Taramasso, manager of Michelin two-wheel competition
Michelin's involvement in the FIM World Championship since 1973 has been marked by incredible achievements, including 500 wins and 60 different winners. These victories spanned 12 different nationalities and eight manufacturers, emphasising the competitiveness of the championship. An astonishing 72% of these victories were open to competition between tyre manufacturers, with Michelin achieving 28% in a single-brand scenario. Notably, Michelin secured 277 victories in the 500cc category and 223 victories in the modern MotoGP™ era.
Throughout its rich history, Michelin has collaborated with some of the most iconic riders in the sport. Valentino Rossi, Mick Doohan, Marc Marquez, Eddie Lawson, Freddie Spencer, Kevin Schwantz, Barry Sheene, Wayne Gardner, Francesco Bagnaia, and Alex Criville are among the most victorious riders with Michelin tires, highlighting the enduring success of this long-standing partnership.
