A race for the ages, and the history books!

The Thai GP gave us the fourth closest podium ever and the second closest top 15 in the premier class

Have you managed to catch your breath yet? We just about have after an outstanding day of MotoGP™ in Buriram. The Thai GP delivered a simply sensational Sunday race, which saw Jorge Martin (Prima Pramac Racing) triumph over Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) and Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) after a gripping finale.

You could throw a blanket over the top three it was that close. In fact, it was so close that just 0.253s separated them, the fourth closest podium ever in a full-length premier class race. It was just beaten by the 2022 Australian GP when only 0.224s separated Alex Rins (LCR Honda Castrol), Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) and Pecco Bagnaia.

Second on the list is the legendary 2006 Portuguese GP in Estoril, when Toni Elias pipped Valentino Rossi on the line and Kenny Roberts Jr claimed third, with 0.176s in it. For the closest finish in premier class history, however, we go back to Phillip Island to the 1999 Australian GP. Just 0.124s separated Tadayuki Okada, Max Biaggi and Regis Laconi that day, and 24 years later, it still holds the record for the closest podium finish in history.

It wasn’t just the top three who were close either in Thailand! Raul Fernandez (CryptoDATA RNF MotoGP™ Team) came home in the final point scoring positions, but was just 15.093s behind the race winner, making for the second closest top 15 in history. It follows in the footsteps of the 2021 Doha Grand Prix when just 8.928s separated Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™) and Miguel Oliveira (CryptoDATA RNF MotoGP™ Team).

If you needed a reminder of why we love this sport, Sunday in Buriram was the perfect example! It was a race that pretty much had everything, and it all means Martin moves closer to Bagnaia in the Championship chase with just three Grands Prix left on the calendar. Malaysia is up next after a short break, and it’s going to be unmissable, so make sure you join us then!
